Question #7 A story
This week while working in the surgical center I was escorting a six year old boy and his parents to his room for a surgery. The boy was quiet and didn't say one word, you could tell he was feeling a mix of emotions as many people are before they go in for surgery. Before surgery, while the patients are in pre-op they are allowed to relax and watch T.V while they are waiting for their appointment. During this time I was able to play with the boy on his ipad to help calm and relax him. Reassuring him many times that everything was going to be okay and that it was going to be over before he knew it. We talked and played for a half hour he showed me all his favorite games teaching me how to play. The nurses then came in and it was time for me to leave, a few hours later I saw him again after his surgery. He told me I was right, and that he didn't feel a thing! At that moment I felt a burst of joy knowing that the effort I put in reassuring this young boy everything was okay and taking the time to relax him before a nerve-racking event. Being able to see your that your assistances can brighten someone else's day is a tremendous reward for my self along with being a great learning experience for the future.
