with an unbelievable experience while also giving back to my community. I have also been able to solidify my decision to go to nursing school and become the nurse i've always dreamed of. I will be taking a course through the Red Cross this summer certifying me as a nursing assistant providing me with the ability to work and make money while studying nursing at Regis college. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to do a Sparc internship to do so because it's a very rewarding experience
My internship at Newton Wellesley Hospital has not only given me the experience of how its like working in a hospital it has also has made me grow as a person, I have learned more about my self in the past fifteen weeks then I ever have. I have been able to establish future connections when looking for employment in various departments of the hospital. I have also made many friends who I was able to learn from and build friendships with throughout the time I spent at the hospital. Taking this internship has also provided me

After spending thirteen weeks at Newton Wellesley Hospital, I am constantly learning more and more about my self as a worker. I am constantly willing to help in any way possible, with no hesitation. I am constantly gaining visual experience of proper patient care when assisting the nurses with any tasks that are asked of me. I am also becoming more confidant when interacting with many different people throughout the day. I am a lot more comfortable assisting people with directions to various parts of the hospital considering Newton Wellesley Hospital lay out is not the easiest place to get around in. I have begun to figure out from the experience I am gaining, which departments I enjoy working in and where I think I would enjoy working in the future. My future goal is to become a pediatric nurse but, after spending many weeks in the surgical center I have started to think I would be interested in becoming an RN, working in the postoperative department. The postoperative department is always busy with patients recovering from a variety of different surgeries, constantly giving the nurses something to do, which makes your job more interesting and never boring.
I had another amazing opportunity to shadow a nurse in the emergency department this week at Newton Wellesley Hosptial. Right when I entered the department the action began, It was a busy day with many different emergencies to take care of ranging from child births to perturbing bones and stitches. The environment in the emergency room is constantly hectic, patients being rushed in and rushed out, air lifted and brought in by stretcher it was hard to feel not in the way.
I was able to speak to many different nurses throughout the day to get advice for my future plans and goals. After being able to experience shadowing a nurse in the psych ward and the emergency department I have decided that when I become a nurse I will gear my studies more towards children and become a pediatric nurse. I have made connections with the nurse educator for Regis college and will be taking a class this upcoming summer to further my studies in the nursing field, becoming certified as a nursing assistant who is registered with the state and can work in a hospital or any assisted living earning a paycheck while balancing college. I arrived in the kitchen first thing in the morning and was handed a hairnet, apron and gloves. My first job was to roll napkins with forks, spoons, and knives. I proceeded to roll napkins with silverware for two hours before I met with the nutrition director at the hospital. She began to explain a little bit about her job as a nutrition director at Newton Wellesley. Later on, I began assisting her with patient meal plans. We began to set up all the orders and meal plans for that day making sure the patients were receiving the correct food based on their hospital diets. After most of the meals were prepared I began delivering the meals on large carts to the patient rooms. Later going back around collecting empty trays and dirty dishes. Overall, I did not enjoy this job as much as the rest. Having the ability to experience the way food is prepared and regulated for each patient in the hospital is a good thing to learn and be able to see. After spending nine weeks at Newton Wellesley Hospital I am really enjoying my time here. I feel as if I am a larger part of the Newton Wellesley community then a volunteer. I have realized that patients truly appreciate the limited help I may be able to give, whether it is a ride in a wheel chair, a cold drink or even a warm blanket.
I never find my self in a bad mood or having a bad day when i'm at the hospital even though some of the jobs I preform are tedious and boring at times.. I am able to stay positive and happy because of the reward I get from a apprecative and compassionate patients. Many times I find my self more content and happy volunteering at Newton Wellesley Hospital than at my paying job. This past week I had a rewarding experience, that has left an everlasting impression on me. when I was escorting an elderly patient out of the hospital after her procedure. she turned to me and smiled asking my name and if was a nurse, I told her I'm just a volunteer, but my future goal is to become a nurse. she mentioned that she had seen me earlier helping another patient when she noticed my kind caring manner . She told me how comforting it made her feel knowing there were such young caring people. We approached her car she said to me, “Daniela with your beautiful smile and patience for people you will be a wonderful nurse”. Immediately I was stuck with a feeling of excitement, feeling proud that I can still have a positive effect on people without being a life saver. Last week during my internship at Newton Wellesley Hospital, I had the experiance to shadow a nurse in the physchiatric ward of the hospital. I spend the entire day in the ward which gave me a great oppertunity to see the daily routine of a nurse. I showed up on Tuesday, promptly at 9:15 am, nervous as to what I was going to see, hear and experiance. I showed up at a double set of locked doors, buzzed in and walked down a long streach of hallways through the East wing (which deals with older and less manic patients) to USEN 4 where patients battle with severe phyciatric problems from bi-polar disorder to depression. I passed through another set of double locked doors and entered into the unit. Where I was then introduced to the nurse I would be shadowing for the day. The first thing I noticed was the lack of light in the unit, there were limited windows and the walls were dark, the entire unit was drained of color. The patients rooms were bare and limited each room had two beds, two side tables, one bulit-in desk. There were no outlets in the rooms and patients did not have acesss to T.V, internet, or phone. There was a phone at each end of the hall for patient use, one T.V in the community room and, computers were only allowed when patients were supervised. Since patients have limited access to the outside world, patients in the unit are able to attend any of the multiple acitivites that happen throught the day. All patients are enouraged to go to as many groups as possible but are not forced to. Every Fifteen minutes a nurse goes on "rounds" where they check on patients and record where they are at that time. Patients have specific times where they are allowed outside to a inclosed patio and are watched the entire time. I started of my day attending a morning group called "goal group" this is a time where patients make small goals that they can achieve that day. Goals ranged from getting discharged, to attending as many groups as possible that day. I watched how medicane was distrubted to patients, I interacted with patients and By the end of the day I was sitting in on an interview with a nonresponding patient who was being admitted to the unit. I really enjoyed the opperunity I was able to experiance last week at the hospital. I learned alot about patients and their struggles, along with how they are treated to get back on their feet and healthy. I also got to witness how hard it is to be a phychatric nurse, I have alot of respect for these caring nurses who still do all they can to help their patients improve. After being called nasty names, being hurt emotionally and physically at times. 8. What does it mean to be an employee of a company/group/industry? Declare your definition here.
Question #7 A story
This week while working in the surgical center I was escorting a six year old boy and his parents to his room for a surgery. The boy was quiet and didn't say one word, you could tell he was feeling a mix of emotions as many people are before they go in for surgery. Before surgery, while the patients are in pre-op they are allowed to relax and watch T.V while they are waiting for their appointment. During this time I was able to play with the boy on his ipad to help calm and relax him. Reassuring him many times that everything was going to be okay and that it was going to be over before he knew it. We talked and played for a half hour he showed me all his favorite games teaching me how to play. The nurses then came in and it was time for me to leave, a few hours later I saw him again after his surgery. He told me I was right, and that he didn't feel a thing! At that moment I felt a burst of joy knowing that the effort I put in reassuring this young boy everything was okay and taking the time to relax him before a nerve-racking event. Being able to see your that your assistances can brighten someone else's day is a tremendous reward for my self along with being a great learning experience for the future. Who inspires you at your job? What about him/her do you find inspiring? Now, who disappoints you? Why?
16. How would the world be different if your industry didn’t exist? Speculate and ponder. If the Hospital industry didn't exist there would be no strong community to help treat the sick and injured. The hospital industry is the most important industry for human survival. The hospital industry is an industry that will always stay in business considering health care will always be a necessity for our society. Not only is the hospital important as a whole but each person who puts their time in effort into helping in a hospital is what really gives the hospital its strength. Whether its a nurse, a doctor, a nurse assistant, a kitchen worker or a volunteer every helping hand counts when helping this type of industry. Spending many days and hours in a hospital really gives you a complete experience of how much work and different jobs are needed to be fulfilled to make the hospital run smoothly and to make sure everyone is safe. Each unit in the hospital is seen as a small community inside the hospital which is the big community. Everyone works together to give assistance and help to anyone in need whether they are part of the specific unit or the hospital in general. If this industry was non existent I feel our society would be uncivilized and unorderly. nobody would get the proper care and health they need to survive. Our society wouldn't be as strong as a community and there would be many more diseases spread throughout the country, peoples life expectancies would not be as long because nobody would have the complete and proper care like we do today. The hospital industry is truly an important industry especially today with the newest and most improved technology and cures that are out there. |
