My first day as a volunteer was on Thursday 1/23 I arrived at Newton Wellesley Hospital at 10:45 after my first two classes at school. I went straight to the voulnteer center at the hospital, since it was my first day on site I recieved my shirt, access number and directions to my first job. That day I helped assist the techs in the gastroenterology center. This is an outpatient clinic where patients come to receive colonoscopy's. During my hours I learnt the proper way to change and sanitize the hospital beds for the next incoming patients. also, I was incharge of escorting family members picking up the patients to the patient's room and often times to their cars. Halfway through the day I was able to take a thirty minute lunch break. It felt weird not knowing anyone at the cafe. I was quickly reminded of high school, the way each table was made up of doctors or nurses from specifc centers of the hospital. it seemed to be just as "cliquely" as the way lunch works at any other highschool. I got my lunch and ate it even though, i didnt have my group of friends to sit with like usual, I didnt mind sitting alone. I didnt need the gratification of being surrounded by many of my friends to make me happy. I understood that being here as an unpaied voulnteer and having the ability to bring a smile or a helping hand to patients sick or well was all the gratification I needed.
Later on in the day I attened a volunteer orientation where I learnt what was expected from me as a student volunteer, how to be professional, and how to assist any patient I may come in contact with to my best ability.
I am excited to see how my first week at the site goes. Each day attended a different job at the hospital giving me the ability to see multiple centers of the hospital while leaving a great impression of myself and my school.
